Found my W-2 online today and downloaded it so I could get started on my taxes. So far I show a refund of just $91. Yeah, I know, it’s best to have your withholding match as close to necessary as possible so that you have your money and not the government, but those $1,000+ refund checks over the last few years were kind of nice.

I was hoping for the refund to take care of misc. other things, like personal property tax and money owed to the state from 2014 (Thanks, Citibank - NOT), but I guess I’ll just have to pay those things out of pocket. Damn.

I already filed for my refund. It’s more than I thought it would be, but with an ex-wife who always changes her mind about who claims the kids I never know for sure from one year to the next exactly how my return will look. I’d rather overpay through the year, than have to come up with three grand to pay later.

I never changed mine until last year. Just kept it the same. In the interim, I’ve bought houses, gotten married, had kids... Those $4000 return checks were nice. This year, I will not have one of those...

Yup...hopefully I will have overpaid this year. The last 2 years we’ve owed around $2k in taxes, so this last year we said screw it and claimed zero allowances on our W4s, so we should be good this year I think. *crosses fingers*

I haven’t had a refund in 10 years. This year will be especially complicated. I now have to deal with my mom’s taxes (she still accrued taxes last year even though she passed in March), my mom’s trust’s taxes, and my family’s taxes. It gets really complicated because I am dealing with entities in two states. Now I have to file state taxes for a person and a trust in two different states, with a death, a property transfer, and periods of unemployment for two different people.

This may be the year I hire a CPA.

I’m not the best at saving money and resisting buying quirky cars. So I make sure to withhold extra so I have a refund. Most of it goes to my town and county taxes though. And a small bit goes to my season pass for tough mudder events.

I’ve owed taxes for over a decade. Joys of being an IC and now business owner.

Congrats on NOT giving the government an interest-free loan.

It is best to be super close. I’d rather owe a small amount (like under 2k) than get a refund. We barely got a refund when we first filed after getting married, which was unexpected, but I guess my taxes were being withheld at the single rate. We thought this year we’d be doing our first itemized return due to the house purchase, but the recent change apparently means all that interest now does nothing for us.

When working for the same company or multiple that all use ADP, it was usually within a handful of dollars when tax time rolled around. I have always been impressed by how precise their withholding is.
